The Twelve Apostles booking system

The Twelve Apostles have a new front door. Since 16 October 2026 the Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre is open, and anyone driving in needs a timed-arrival booking to park there.

For years the Twelve Apostles worked on a simple rule: turn up, find a park, walk to the lookout. On a summer afternoon that meant circling a full car park while coaches queued behind you. The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) has replaced that with a new building, a bigger car park and a booking system that gives every car a set arrival time.

This post covers what changed, how the booking works, what it costs now and later, what stays outside the system and why a tour takes the whole question off your plate. For the full entry rules in one place, see our booking and entry guide.

The quick answer

Drivers need a timed-arrival booking, made on the official Twelve Apostles website, to park at the Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre. Booking is free until April 2027; after that a booking fee applies, and GORCAPA has not announced the amount. Locals and the Eastern Maar community are to be exempt. Tour coaches get guaranteed bays and their own gate, so tour guests book nothing extra. Gibson Steps and Loch Ard Gorge are outside the system.

What changed at the Twelve Apostles on 16 October 2026?

The new Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre opened, and parking there now needs a booking for a set arrival time.

The centre is the core of the A$126 million Twelve Apostles Precinct Redevelopment, built by Development Victoria and run by GORCAPA. The Victorian Government's announcement put it plainly: bookings to the Twelve Apostles are now required before arriving and to secure a car park.

The name comes from the Eastern Maar, the Traditional Owners of this coast. Marcus Clarke, CEO of the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, called the naming "a small but powerful act of returning Language to the place it has always belonged." Here is the new system at a glance:

How do you book a parking slot at the Twelve Apostles?

On the official Twelve Apostles website. You book your car for an arrival time, then drive in through the Booringa Road gate.

The booking is for the vehicle and the people in it. AAP reported at the opening that a number plate reader and QR codes manage the car park, and that bollards along the roadside stop drivers parking outside the system. Book before you leave Melbourne: the Apostles are about 3 hours away inland, and it is easier to drive to a fixed time.

  • Pick a realistic time. Inland it is about 230 km; along the coast about 285 km, with 4 to 5 hours of driving before any stops.
  • Book early for busy days. Bookings are essential. Without one you may wait or be turned away when the car park is full.
  • Know the hours. The car park opens 6am to 9pm, and cars can leave at any time.
  • Allow time on site. The official website suggests up to 1 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace.

For the drive itself, including which way round to go, see our Melbourne to Twelve Apostles drive guide.

Is there a fee to visit the Twelve Apostles?

Not yet. Booking is free until April 2027, when a booking fee starts. GORCAPA has not announced how much it will be.

GORCAPA says fees "will be consistent with other popular nature-based attractions across the country", and that all the money goes back into the coast and parks of the Great Ocean Road. That is all that is official. Any dollar figure you see quoted online is a guess.

Two groups are to be exempt: locals and the Eastern Maar community. GORCAPA has not yet fixed who counts as local. Its FAQ says the definition is to be determined but will be common-sense and fair. For a trip this summer the cost question is simple: the booking is free, and only the booking itself is needed.

Do tour groups need to book the Twelve Apostles?

No. Tour operators book a guaranteed coach bay for a set time, so guests on a tour have nothing extra to book.

GORCAPA built the system with coaches in mind: operators know exactly when they can get in, and coaches and Coasters use their own boom gate off Booringa Road. On a tour you step off at the centre and walk to the lookouts. No account, no QR code, no watching the clock in traffic near Geelong.

The reverse boutique tour lists a "12 Apostles Entrance Ticket" among its inclusions, in the operator's own words, and the sunset tour lists national park entry fees. Rated 4.9 from 1,922 reviews, the reverse tour drives inland in the morning and reaches the Apostles first, for US$97 in a minibus of up to 12. Breakfast and lunch are not included.

Are Gibson Steps and Loch Ard Gorge part of the booking system?

No. GORCAPA says the changes apply only to the new visitor centre, and public access to Gibson Steps and Loch Ard Gorge is unchanged.

Gibson Steps is about 2 km east of the main car park: 86 steps down the cliff to the beach, with two stacks, Gog and Magog, standing just offshore. GORCAPA reopened the steps after a rockfall closure, and they stay open when conditions allow. At high tide most of the beach goes under water, and swimming is off the table.

At Loch Ard Gorge the lookouts are open, but the stairs to the beach were still closed for repairs when we checked. GORCAPA is fixing the staircase and fencing off the foot of the cliffs, and says the beach reopens once the works are done. The story of the gorge and the 1878 wreck is in our Gibson Steps, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge guide.

What is at the Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre?

A rooftop observation deck, an exhibition, a 230-seat cafe, a kiosk and accessible paths to the viewing platforms. It is open 8am to 8pm in the daylight-saving months, last arrival 7pm.

The official Twelve Apostles website lists accessible parking, a Changing Places facility, a sensory room and wheelchair-accessible trails and platforms. Audio stories run in several languages, so bring headphones. The Welcome Garden by the car park shares Eastern Maar heritage. Food comes from Elizabeth Andrews Catering, with Timboon Distillery and Timboon Fine Ice Cream at the kiosk.

GORCAPA says the site is busiest in the middle of the day, and quieter early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Sunset is the classic time for photos. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in Port Campbell National Park.
